About Becker Vineyards

The Beckers began searching for a log cabin to renovate in order to create a hill country getaway from their home in San Antonio. The couple had traveled extensively abroad and had always been passionate about experiencing culinary and wine delights. The Beckers enjoyed frequenting the few central Texas wineries as well. The cabin was discovered in 1990 and along with it, 46 acres of raw land, fallow fields of deep sand and Precambrian granitic soils 1500 feet above sea level. The Estate has now grown to a total of 308 acres. The site was rich with native mustang grapes, a time honored and essential component of the local German heritage. Both Richard and Bunny were successful gardeners back in San Antonio and the dream of a commercial vineyard and maybe a 1500-case winery began to take shape. In 1992 the first plantings were lovingly placed in the ground by friends and family, including the Beckers' daughter Clementine and two sons Will and Joe. The first harvest in 1995, laid the foundation for what is now just over a 100,000 case per year winery. Becker Vineyards' wine has been served in the stateliest of settings, including seven times in the White House, the James Beard Foundation in New York, the Texas Governor's Mansion and many other famous restaurants in Texas and the United States. Becker Farms, Inc. employs over 50 people and cultivates approximately 56 acres of estate fruit featuring 9 harvest ready varietals. The lavender fields and seasonal flower plantings are appealing to any horticulturist. As you make your way down Highway 290, Jenschke Lane, and the Becker Farms Road you will drive by and take in fields of native wildflowers, peach orchards, milo fields, oat patches, and corn fields with seasonal hay production. The Becker Family aspires to maintain the "Old World" feel at the winery. As you make your way down Becker Farms Road, alongside our estate Syrah, Petite Sirah and Sauvignon Blanc, you cross the stone bridge and see our main tasting room entrance and winery. Adjacent to the winery is the Lavender Haus and the original homestead cabin. The 1890's cabin was renovated in 1997 and for years served as a charming bed and breakfast. Today, the cabin is being re-renovated as part of a possible "Heritage Tour" venue under consideration by the Beckers. The welcoming hearth just inside the front door of the main tasting room crackles and pops with warmth on chilly days at the vineyard. In the Texas spring and summer months, the covered veranda and pavillion provide cover from the elements and host an outside wine tasting experience. Have a glass and take a moment to rest in full view of the lavender fields, wildflower fields and antique windmill. The late former First Lady, Lady Bird Johnson who was famous for her Texas wildflower projects, loved our fields of native wildflowers and was also a huge fan of the Becker Chardonnay. As you stroll through the main tasting room, look for her "letter of thanks" as well as the many other letters and awards presented to the Beckers.
